A Career as a Chef
by Alicia Hagadone, '11

Being a chef can be a very rewarding career.  You can succeed financially and experience many new types of food.  Now you may wonder how one becomes a chef.  Here is what you would need to do.

  • Know the culinary lingo and terms.  If the words “julienne” and “tumeric” are foreign to you, you have work to do.
  •  Get as much experience as you can.  Be able to handle a knife as well as indulstrial-sized machines.  Practice your people skills.  Remember, the customer is always right…even if they are wrong!
  •  Culinary school is a good idea but not necessary.  Some good schools include The Culinary Institute of America and the Le Cordon Bleu Schools.

A career as a chef can be challenging and require a lot of hard work, but it also can be very rewarding.  Imagine all of the places you could travel, learning the cultures and cuisines of different countries.  Food can take you on an adventure!
