Bad Day Turned Worse
by Jaclyn Calabrese, '11
It was the second day of school and only the third game of our field hockey season. I was actually having one of my best games ever until I went down, and was injured pretty badly.  I was able to hop off of the field to the bench, but as the pain intensified, I knew I had to leave.  My parents came to the sideline to help me but if you know the distance from the athletic benches to the entrance gate of the field hockey/soccer field, we soon ran into a problem.

We needed a golf cart to transport me to my car, but the school doesn't have one.  In a matter of seconds, my really bad day just got a lot worse.

I tried hopping, but with the distance I soon gave up and my father had to pick me up and carry me.  We had to ask someone to drive his car down through the entrance to the sideline and the whole thing became much bigger ordeal than it needed to be.  Shortly after I left, two other players from my team were also injured and had to be carried to their cars.

Our field may be the farthest from the road of any field our school plays at, especially with our fence prohibiting the entrance of cars.  Other schools we travel to obtain a golf cart for times like these.  We have a beautiful facility for our games, but with such a far distance for injured players, some form of transportation really is necessary.

In times like these, it may be asking a lot for the district to come up with money to spend on a golf cart to transport injured players, but it really is necessary.  Because it's a safety issue, maybe booster clubs may be willing to help with the financial burden.  The football team has a small-four wheeler at Park Terrace -- Connor Burns recently rode in that when he was injured during a game.  But what about the other teams?  Maybe if the high school had a similar cart, it would help ensure that someone's bad day doesn't get worse.
