Help...It's an Emergency!
by David McDougall III,  '11

An emergency situation can catch many people off guard. Many do not think of what to do in an emergency or what supplies they should keep handy. Take electricity, for example. We use electricity constantly. When there is a power outage, usually people are only inconvenienced. However, sometimes, a power outage can be life threatening.

Here are some things that you can do to be prepared for your next power outage.

Keep emergency supplies ready all the time.  These include:

  • canned food
  • bottled water
  • non-electric can opener
  • flashlight with spare working batteries
  • a flashlight with dead batteries is of little use to you
  • a car battery and inverter
  • extra fuel such as gasoline to recharge a car's battery
  • propane for cooking and lighting
  • a battery operated radio

When the power is out, conserve resources that you have.

  • don't waste water
  • keep doors and windows closed to keep heat in or heat out
  • open doors and windows at night if natural cooling is desired
  • don't leave the refrigerator door open-get in and get out

If emergency heating is required be safe

  • follow manufacture's instructions
  • don't use products designed for outside use inside
  • if anyone begins to feel the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, leave the premises immediately
  • be sure that a hot surface does not come in contact with anything flammable

One of the most important things is to stay informed.  Officials will use AM and FM radio bands to broadcast information to the public.  Information can include

  • when power will be restored
  • special shelters set up to allow people to warm up or cool down depending on the season
  • which stores are open and what supplies they have
  • what other places of business may be open if other services are necessary

These tips should help you stay safe in an emergency. The number one rule is to think clearly and not to panic.
