 Mr. G's Latin V class

Mourning Safire

by Kaitlin Clemente, '10

Gloversville High School’s Senior Latin class and alumni deeply mourn the passing of William Safire.  Each week we were treated to a first rate lesson on the infrastructure of the English language.

Relying heavily on his study of Greek and Latin, Mr. Safire carefully crafted his weekly masterpiece and made it seem effortless.  In addition, he gently forced us to pay attention to the current political climate and its relationship to our own participation in government.

While not always agreeing with his views politically, this master linguist taught us to love the English language and respect its form and function.  The proof truly was in the pudding!

Requiescat in pace.

Senior Latin Class Fundraiser
by Kaitlin Clemente and Allison Bascoe, '10

On Saturday, September 19th, the Senior Latin class held their first fund-raiser for the trip to Washington D.C. which will take place in May of 2010.  They raised an astounding $555, with the support of the community, and many former Latin students were happy to help in any way they could.

The class would like to extend their thanks to the number of GHS faculty, Board members, and family who showed their support, along with the many donors who didn't have time to get their car washed, but wanted to contribute anyway.

However, this is only the beginning for Latin V's fund-raising.  They are planning on having one each month until they head to Washington.  Your support will be greatly appreciated.
