The mentoring program at GHS is an amazing program created by our very own Mrs. McCue and Mrs. Poe-Faugere. The concept is simple -- upperclassmen donate some of their time to help some of the younger students who made need help.
This is the mentoring program's sixth year. It all started with Mrs. McCue and former GMS principal Mr. Flint, who noticed a classroom filled with both special needs and regular education students. According to Mrs. McCue, when these students interacted with each other, the special needs kids were able to interact and feel like typical students, while the typical students began respecting their special needs peers. The program was created to help those with special needs, but it grew to help any student who was struggling.
To become a mentor, students need to fill out an application and obtain a reference letter from a teacher or staff member. This reference letter jump-starts your collection for college and scholarships.
According to Mrs. McCue, the mentoring program benefits both the mentor and the student. "It teaches respect and it helps them interact with all types of people," she said "It also helps them learn to manage their time."
The mentoring program has really grown over the years. It has expanded into Warm the Children, the Guest Greeter program, and the new Clothing Closet program, which gathers clothing for those in need at our school.
Thank you mentors and Mrs. McCue and Mrs. Poe-Faugere for your efforts in making our school a better place!
