Preparing for College
by Dana Garguilio and Amanda Sweet, '11

It’s about that time to make one or more of the biggest decisions of your life -- what college will you go to?  There are hundreds of colleges to choose from.  Now don’t panic; we will help you sort things out to make your decision easier.

When making this decision, clear your head and think of what you want to do with your life.  Now, there are those of us who have no idea what we want to be, but hey, that is okay.  You have time in college to still decide.  You can go to a community college, get your general classes done, and then decide on a major.

Cost is something that many of use worry about, too.  The financial struggles in our economy are well-known but do not let that stop you from pursuing a degree.  Scholarships, grants, and financial aid can help ease the burden.

Here are some other tips:

  • Talk to your guidance counselors!  It’s their job to help you figure this out and they are great at what they do!
  • Start visiting colleges your junior year – you’ll be glad when you are a busy senior that you did!
  • Start planning for your SATS early in your junior year and log on to collegeboard.com to start some test prep.
  • Be nice to your teachers!  You’ll need them to write you spectacular letters of recommendations!

The most important thing is to remember – you’re not in this alone.  Ask your parents, friends, teachers, and counselors to help.  Good luck!
